"Though centuries ago it was declared 'barbarous' (compared to 'English Law'),
Brehon Law has since been recognized as the most advanced system of jurisprudence in the ancient world; and, it was a system under which the
'doctrine of the equality of ALL mankind (before the law)' was well understood: and well used for the purpose of combating the now apparently impossible to remedy
"impunity problem" -- which the whole world virtually (including the Republic of Ireland) is plagued with at the present time." (From:

Centuries of anti-Irish racism may have played a big part in Tara's present demise?by Nodhlaig Sun Mar 22, 2009 13:52Gerald of Wales (c. 1146 – c. 1223), or Giraldus Cambrensis (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_of_Wales ) seems to have been among the earliest and most successful writers of note to indulge in
Anti-Irish racism.
And, it appears that such people made a very big impression in
Rome around the time of
Pope Adrian IV -- please see at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Irish_racism .
It was Pope Adrian who granted
Henry II's request to not only subdue
Ireland, but to also subdue the fully self-supporting and autonomous groups of
Celtic Christian monks, who lived and worked in places like
Clonmacnoise for example -- and who appear to have had little or no time for Rome, and Rome's attempts to dominate and to dictate to
them.
Part of Pope Adrian's papal bull
"Laudabiliter" (of 1155 AD) reads as follows:
"(we) do hereby declare our will and pleasure, that, for the purpose of enlarging the borders of the Church (of Rome), setting bounds to the progress of wickedness, reforming evil manners, planting virtue, and increasing the Christian religion ..."Fourteen years later (on May 1st 1169 AD): The Anglo Norman Invasion of Ireland began (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_invasion_of_Ireland ).
There is no mention at all it seems in the Anti-Irish racism (of Pope Adrian IV's time) that it was the Celtic Christian monks who were responsible for getting Ireland the
"Island of
Saints and Scholars" reputation during the so called
"Dark Ages" ??? - a period described by some as "600 years of degenerate, godless, inhuman behaviour" in the rest of Europe (including Rome itself perhaps?).
There is no mention either of the fact that it was the Celtic Christian monks, using monasteries such as
Clonmacnoise (founded in 545 AD and probably the world's first and most important Christian University) as a base, who created the large network of Christian monasteries throughout the European mainland which later provided the backbone for
the re-launch of Western Civilisation: just after the
Roman Empire had eventually drowned in its own cesspit of greed and corruption, a demise which has many remarkable similarities to what we might perhaps be experiencing in our own society at the present time?

"Scorched earth" tactics at Tara and Turoe (from an archaeological viewpoint)by Alana Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:30
It's interesting how in
"A View of the Present State of Ireland", Edmund Spenser (1552 - 1599) shows himself as an advocate of "scorched earth" tactics: in support of his overall belief that
"Ireland would never be totally 'pacified' by the English until its indigenous language and customs had been destroyed, if necessary by violence."If he was alive today, the violent cultural activities of the
M3 and
N6
bulldozers in the
Hill of Tara and
Hill of Turoe areas would no doubt meet with Edmund Spenser's full approval.
What I find most amazing though, is that there are so many people alive today, who -- by their actions -- really do appear to still share the 16th century Edmund Spenser type approach to Celtic culture: which is actually genocidal. Are we, as an overall society, "marching backwards into the future" perhaps?
