============================ Have they no shame left in them? by Martha Mon Jun 09, 2008 11:22 Article 29.2 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads as follows: "In the exercise of his (and her) rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a DEMOCRATIC society." How can the European Union claim to be a genuine "democratic society" when the vast majority of its population is being prevented from voting on an issue so important as the Lisbon Treaty? Democracy is a core part of human rights law (as set out by the United Nations in 1948), and many would argue that it provides the basic platform on which all human rights law is structured. Take away that platform, and there can be no human rights law? -- which is exactly what a certain group of people are extremely anxious to achieve apparently. The Lisbon Treaty, and the way "they" are going about implementing it (force-feeding I should say perhaps), simply has to be extremely bad news for the general welfare of human society all over the world? I know which way I'll be voting.
