Dear Gerry,Thank you for your recent
e-mail (dated August 28th 2008). I was saddened
to learn of your loss. With reference to the
meeting you suggested for this coming Thursday
(September 4th) in Omagh, please note that something
completely unexpected happened to me yesterday (i.e.
Sunday August 31st 2008). I happened to be
looking out my front window at about 1.30 pm, when I
saw a police car pull up, and park. Shortly afterwards
three police officers emerged from the car: two of
them holding what appeared to me to be very large
machine guns. The two officers with the
machine guns then positioned themselves about 30 yards
apart in front of my home, while the third officer
came to my front door and informed me that I was
required to attend a meeting in Omagh Police Station
at "1400" hours today (i.e. Monday September 1st
2008): on a "voluntary" basis; and, that if I did not
show up, they would be back to arrest me later
today. Although I tried to discuss the
situation with them, it quickly became clear that they
were not happy about doing so, and would not
allow it. Consequently, I'm not really sure
what this is all about? I assume however that
it must be something to do with the e-mails I have
sent to Chief Inspector Michael Winters (Omagh Police
Station) during recent weeks, which are listed at http://www.humanrightsireland.com/
As this incident has left me feeling
completely unsafe in the presence of the police,
I have decided not to attend today's "voluntry"
meeting with them - which the police have scheduled
for 20 minutes or so from now. Also, I have
left my home in Greencastle for the time being -- so
there is no point in the police going to my home
today: because I intend to stay away from it until
such time as I have received a satisfactory
explanation for yesterday's surprise "machine gun"
visit. I would be very grateful if you would
please try to find out what this police business is
all about? As things stand, and for reasons
which I feel should be obvious, I have no wish to make
any further attempts to discuss this matter directly
with the police myself -- certainly not at the present
time. I look forward to hearing from you, and I
hope to be able to check my e-mails every few hours
(during the working day) for the coming few
days. Best wishes, William
(Finnerty). | |
