GENERAL USE OF SEARCH ENGINES

Many people feel that world wide web search engines should, ideally, look for information in a completely neutral way. However, in the real world there is some evidence to suggest that this type of ideal situation might not always exist at the present time (July 2000).

Users may find it useful to keep in mind the following public statement on www search engines made recently by Tim Berners-Lee (the person who was mainly responsible for inventing and implementing the world wide web service):

"When I ask a search engine to find the information it can on a topic, I don't expect it to return just the sites of companies that happen to advertise with or make payments to the search engine company. If a search engine is not giving me completely neutral results, then I should be told about it with some notice or icon."
