6th of January

A.K.GENT

On the 6th of January we held a blockkade of a Shell gasstation in the city of Ghent (Belguim)
We did this blockkade out of solidarity with the people who are resisting Shell in Rossport, Ireland. We also wanted to commemorate the 9 Ogoni activists who were murderd by Shell in the Nigerdelta.

During the action we were able to turn away most of the cars after we had a conversation with the drivers. We also handed out informative flyers to people passing by and showed our banners which said "SHELL OUT OF IRELAND" and "SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE IN ROSSPORT AND THE NIGER DELTA"

After about one hour the police arrived and broke up the blockkade and checked everybody's id cards.

Greetings from Ghent to the people in Rossport and the Niger delta

Let the fight go on !!!
Shell to Sea !!!
Solidarity without borders !!!!

Nice to see awareness of shell's underhand corporate behaviour spreading and principled people taking a stand. Happy to see that these corporate slime aren't getting everything their own way. Interesting to see that they are still trading as shell in Belgium. They had to change their name to Topaz in Ireland to avoid the bad publicity here.

Thanks a million to all involved in Ghent action - it always means a lot to those beleagured by corporate arrogance and weak governance.

Thanks again and be assured that we'll keep the fight going here for as long as it takes.

Thank you all who stood against Shell with this protest, we here in Ireland have been protesting for many years and it's really great that others around the World stand up against Shells world pollution. Human beings have the right to live in an Environment that is free from toxic pollution that Shell thinks it's alright to discharge into our air and water; Thank You again from the People of Erris Ireland,,

While I (as always) feel extremely grateful to all those who take to the streets in peaceful and lawful ways, to protest against major outbreaks of government and corporate wrongdoing, my fear is that such protests will never (by themselves) be enough to remedy the basic set of problems involved: having due regard for the kind of people who are doing (and the many who in one way or another are supporting!!) the wrongdoing in this particular case, and in many others like it all around the world.

I can very easily understand the viewpoint that "weak governance" is playing a major role.

However, there is also the alternative perception that, from the viewpoint of the wrongdoers, it is "strong governance" (albeit of the completely wrong kind as far as I'm concerned) that is, on an ongoing basis, winning all (or almost all) the important battles for the tyrannous despots, plutocrats, and kleptocrats (etcetera) who are indulging themselves with impunity in the extremely serious, but exceptionally well and deceitfully hidden, criminal activity concerned.

Unless the starting place of the well-hidden and devious power-source which drives and sustains such "strong governance" can be honestly sought out, faced up to -- by sufficiently large numbers of honest people -- and successfully tackled by the use of the FULL range of all peaceful and lawful means available to them, I have difficulty in seeing how there can ever be a happy ending for humanity generally (i.e. humanity as a whole)?

Then, and to add to the already large set of obvious difficulties involved, there's still the less-obvious and awful -- and perhaps impossible to remedy snag (for humanity generally)? -- which Shakespeare's Hamlet pointed out over 400 years ago:

"Ay, sir; to be honest, as this world goes, is to be one man picked out of ten thousand."
